Frontier Geomatics Addresses Bottleneck in Aerial Mapping Providing Aerial Triangulation Services
Aerial triangulation is a critical step in the entire photogrammetric process, including planimetric and topographic map compilation, orthophoto production, and digital terrain model editing and creation.

“Over the years I have offered AT bundle adjustments only, but have expanded my services photo point measurements to deliver my customers a full AT solution as well as boresighting capabilities for their NovAtel SPAN, IGI-Aerocontrol, Leica IPAS and Applanix POSAVsystems,” said Roman Kathofer, president of Frontier Geomatics, Inc.

Aerial triangulation provides exterior orientation parameters necessary to convert image measurements into ground coordinates, and correlate image points to points on the ground.

Frontier Geomatics will provide:

  • ABGPS/IMU processing and EO-input for AT point matching from SPAN, Aerocontrol, IPAS and POSAV systems
  • Imagery from Z/I DMC, Leica ADS, metric digital cameras and scanned large-format photography
  • Direct import of Intergraph, Socet Set and DAT/EM projects, if available
  • Full tie-point matching with Inpho's MATCH-AT with blunder detection and thorough manual data cleaning
  • Camera self-calibration, if requested
  • Data export to PATB, Bingo, BLUH, Socet Set, Z/I projects, DAT/EM Summit Evolution, Pex2, Phorex Phocus and various analytical stereo-plotters
  • Full report on results with analysis of input data as well as achieved accuracies
  • In case of boresighting we issue a Boresight Certificate with angles and their standard deviations

“I take on any size of blocks, whether they are just a few dozen or a few thousand photos. I take pride in a fast turn-around and meticulous quality-checking,” said Kathofer.

Frontier Geomatics also provides a means for confident, airborne kinematic positioning without ground reference using TerraPOS, the Precise Point Positioning software.

TerraPOS is GNSS (GPS+GLONASS) post-processing software capable of accurate positioning without the use of reference stations or DGPS services. Reference stations are made obsolete by employing precise satellite orbits and satellite clock corrections coupled with state-of-the-art error modeling.

TerraPOS is specially developed for kinematic applications, such as airborne photogrammetry or LIDAR operations, seabed mapping, or seismic surveying. When processing kinematic raw data of good quality, accuracy of 3 cm (horizontal) and 4 cm (vertical) RMS has been independently verified. The combination of great ease-of-use and this level of performance makes TerraPOS unique worldwide.

Frontier Geomatics Inc. is an airborne sensing consulting firm specializing in GPS, INS and Lidar mapping systems. They are a partner of TopoSys North America, a NovAtel SPAN (GPS/INS) representative, and market and support the most accurate GPS-PPP software TerraPOS. Frontier Geomatics supplies state-of-the-art survey systems, customized solutions and personal technical support to provide valuable, reliable and affordable solutions to customers in the airborne sensing field.

TopoSys LIDAR/Imaging Systems Deliver High-Value LIDAR Applications

There are two schools of thought in the LIDAR mapping business: One group wants to commoditize LIDAR by flying as high and as fast as possible to collect low-res LIDAR data… covering very large areas at a very low cost … with little or no value-add. Then, there is a second group that recognizes the growing demand for higher accuracy, higher density, higher quality LIDAR data that can be acquired simultaneously with multispectral imagery to derive the full benefits of the technology and generate a greater return on their investment.

The TopoSys line of LIDAR/Imaging systems are engineered specifically to deliver high value applications such as engineering site development, road surveys, power and pipeline monitoring, hydrographic studies, coastal erosion, topographic mapping and 3D urban/city models.

TopoSys Virtually Eliminates Calibration Flights For Aerial LIDAR Surveys

Denver, Colorado – November 13, 2007 – TopoSys has virtually eliminated the need for calibration flights or “Boresighting” for aerial LIDAR surveys with their line of LiDAR sensors which are highly stable, completely integrated, turn-key systems of IMU, GPS, LIDAR sensor and digital imaging systems.

"Calibration" and "boresighting" are two terms for the process to determine the offsets between the IMU coordinate axes and the Lidar coordinate axes. This is accomplished with a "patch test" flight over a suitable area in a clover-leaf, or figure eight, pattern (N-S, W-E and reverse). Most aerial LIDAR manufacturers recommend collecting "3D objects" on the terrain that are easily identifiable in the Lidar imagery, such as industrial buildings with flat roof tops or gabled roofs are even better. The results from this small patch flight are the roll, pitch and heading offsets between the IMU and the laser.

Independent Geo-Spatial Quality Review, Is It Really Worth the Extra Money?

A common question asked by many purchasers of geo-spatial data is “Do we want to spend additional money for independent quality control (QC)”?  The project may have been purchased as a low bid and money was saved, should you use this saved money to contract with an independent QC provider for verification that the data was indeed collected and processed as detailed in your scope of work?   The potential always exists that the data delivered may not be suitable for the intended mapping applications.

The industry is experiencing a reduction in geospatial product pricing; this is in part due to the latest advances in sensor technology and processing software.  The downside of these advances is that all providers, whether they have advanced systems or not, need to collect and process data on tighter budgets and schedules.  Even though vendors have best intentions, errors and quality review can be overlooked when budgets are tight.
